Winner of NIYANTRA-2015 Contest
Smart Bin – Step towards Swachch Bharat

NIYANTRA is an annual Graphical System Design contest organized by National Instruments to foster the spirit of innovation in engineering students and expose them to the essence of experiential education through contest. National Instruments organized the contest and showcased the top projects in NI Days event on 19th November at Bangalore. The contest began with 750 teams participating from various colleges all over India.
AKGEC NI LabVIEW Academy secured First position in the contest through multiple submissions of abstracts, progress reports, viva and videos for the project “Smart Bin – Step towards Swachch Bharat” Smart Bin as the name signifies can be used at any place, be it in shopping malls, offices or organizations. The function of Smart Bin Project is to collect garbage and dumps from various places and empty the same at a specified location as it gets filled. Role of this project is to collect all the garbage or useless things from the place, and to dump at the specified location after it gets filled. LabVIEW platform is used to design and develop the framework for whole system. A controller Data acquisition card named “MyRIO” is mounted in the bin so as to get all the data from the various parts of bin and give the required command further. A line follower technique is used to give directions to drive the bin towards a specified direction. A LCD monitor mounted over the top of the bin, keeps playing a video which encourages people to use bin rather than throwing wastage anywhere. This platform is an opportunity for engineering students to solve challenging real life problems and get rewarded for it. Such contests, helps undergraduate engineers, design their project ideas and convert them into working models using NI hardware and software over a period of six months.  Jayaram Pillai, Managing Director, India, Russia, Africa , NI, said, “NI Yantra is committed to support and help these budding individuals with access to our technologies to create applications that can solve problems that humanity face as a whole.”
